In a blink of an eye

Second star on the right, straight on til' morning
Peter Pan

My Sister in law, Ann gave me a sign with these words and they have been hanging in my boys room as a reminder for the last ten years. A reminder that one of my wishes as a mother was never going to come true.

Little boys grow up.

They were not going to bring me worms from their pockets or give me dandelions for flowers. They were not going to swing from branches upside down or throw rocks way too close to cars. Hours and hours spent outside hollering and yelling would shift indoors to watching some crummy TV show.
The years of endless little league baseball games would all come to an end. I loved seeing that proud look in their eye and tiny relieved smile as they start their mad dash to first base.
I knew those dirty little bodies snuggling on my lap begging for another story would transfer to being curled up into their own corner of their room reading by themselves.

I used to ache inside thinking of them growing older. How to hold onto the precious days, like sand in my hands, consumed my thoughts. I knew that time was a gift with them and it would be over in a blink of an eye. I would call my sister Angelin (She hated seeing her kids grow up as much as I did) crying to try and figure out how to slow everything down. It was something I wrestled with everyday.

And then it sorta just stopped.

I don't know when it did, but it did. I am not saying that I don't dread it anymore because I do but I don't cry and fret like I used to. It probably is because I still have my littles that occupy so much of my energy and time. Nicholas was almost 13 when Charlie was born so I got another precious little boy to give me dandelions. (Which he does everyday.) I also think that I am sincerely enjoying this time with my boys growing up too.

Teenagers are hysterical.

I mean they are really funny and their lives are wildly entertaining. One of the reasons is because suddenly I get them. I know they don't think I was ever their age and I am creepily ancient but I remember being a teen. I remember the driving, the friends and the dates. This all seems oddly familiar and I enjoy watching them plow through it. Of course there are things I really don't like and watching them fumble around is hard. I sometimes want to take control of their life so they don't make stupid mistakes but that is just it... I can't. They have to learn from their own mistakes. But in the process they are growing into these amazing people. People I am so proud and honored to know. It takes my mind off of the ticking clock and into seriously enjoying their company.

One of those teen milestones happened to my boy last Saturday night....Junior Prom. I loved almost every part of preparing for that night. I have to say almost because it cost me serious money for my teen's memory. I also did not enjoy the fact that he thought 4:00 was a completely reasonable curfew. We agreed on 2:30 but that was not without hours of debate.

I did however
love being there when he asked her. I loved seeing how sweet and darling his date was. I loved going to pick up his date with him. I loved chauffeuring them both to the pre- party. Most of all I just loved being there whenever he'd let me because just like everything else it was over ....in a blink of an eye.

So funny... so that night my honey was off playing with his brother and friends. I was home flipping through the channels and the ultimate 80's prom movie comes on... "Pretty in Pink." I just found myself sitting there smiling. It brought back so many great memories. How can it be that now my own son was having those same milestones?

Even though time continues to pass, I am grateful that I will always be a mother.

New backpack rack

Since forever ago we have wanted to redo our chalkboard and hooks. Since we don't have a mudroom this hall is our catch all for coats, backpacks and purses.

I have wanted something really rustic that looks like old
recycled barn wood. My honey caught the vision and built these beauties and it was exactly what was inside my head. He's like some kind of building magician. He also chunked out the existing frame on the chalkboard and beat it up so it didn't look out of places with all its newness. Oh how I L.O.V.E.how it turned out.

I am grateful for my new catch all hooks.

BTW I am linking up to My uncommon Slice of Suburbia

If you give your children a boxed cake mix....

We have had our fair share of rainy days as of late. I mean really big storms. The kind with powerful wind and serious rainfall. We lost our power on Saturday night which meant a fun spooky evening with our candles and flashlights. But we are really outdoor creatures by nature and my littles seriously need to be outside.

So our house has been a little like "The Cat and the Hat" with thing 1 and thing 2 going completely nutty. I needed to give my thing 1 and thing 2 a little direction so we decided to make a cake. Not just an ordinary cake-- a large cupcake. It clearly didn't turn out and it was then voted by the littles the ugliest cake in the world. But it was seriously hilarious.. give your children a cake and you can kill 4 hours in a blink of an eye. Sometimes that is a bad thing but in this case that was a great thing. So I sat back and watched them in wonder, smiling as they made an exciting day out of a boxed cake mix and some colored sprinkles.

I am grateful for my littles.....they make me smile.

Finished Living room

Here is the final reveal of the living room. I absolutely l.o.v.e. love the way it turned out. The paint color I ended up with is just slightly grayer (no underlying blue tones) then the molding. I have learned that gray has a mind of its own and you have to be very careful. We obviously learned the hard way. It is all very light and airy just the way I had envisioned it from the very beginning. OK so it took painting the room 5 times what else are we going to do? :)

My honey and I also rearranged my artwork, painted the shutters, painted my end table and refinished the coffee table. I have decided that I do not like refinishing. Holy cow that was time consuming. End result...amazing. But I seriously wondered if it was worth it while I was stripping 6 layers of varnish. The coffee table had great lines but had turned orange over the years. I wanted that English antique color. We put this great wax that we had to travel all over dodge trying to find. In the end between the sweat and tears it was all worth it.

We spend every night in here gathered around the fire...it is so stinkin cozy. I am grateful that my honey loves to paint and redo as much as I do because well... it might not have ever happened.

A Little Secret

Oh my goodness this just made my day and this is why I love blog land.
Where else would I find secrets like this that make me so unbelievably happy?
Let me just get to the point....
YOU CAN MAKE MICROWAVE POPCORN IN A BROWN PAPER BAG!

That's right no more buying microwave popcorn and I have no doubt it has like a million times less preservatives.
So here is the secret of the day.

1/3 C. popcorn
a little bit of olive oil
some sea salt
put in brown paper bag, fold top over twice
microwave for about 2 min. 20 sec

I am so grateful that I stumbled on this but I can't find the source. As soon as I find it I will credit the rightful owner. Have a great day and happy popping to you!

Hurry up Spring

All across the country we are aching for spring. Even though we have had our glimpses in the bay area, it is far from consistent. Each day is a crap shoot and we range from a perfect sunny day to down right cold. (I am fully aware that cold is all relative but believe me 50's seems cold...I'm serious)

So how fitting that Becky's assignment is spring postcards. How perfect is that? The only thing that took my excitement away was seeing that the thrive project is over. What fun it has been to head over every Tuesday to farmgirl paints and see what new assignment she had in store for us. It was so great to learn from Becky and to see all the other talent out there. So thank you Becky and fellow bloggers, it has been a pleasure to thrive with you all. Postcard #2

I am thankful for all things spring. I am thankful for the warm days and the chilly nights. I am thankful to drive up to my house and see the azaleas and crocus blooming. I am thankful for God's reminder that everything that dies will indeed live again.
