November is for Gratitude

So this is Charlie back at the beginning of August as pleased as he can be with himself. I just added this picture because it has to be one of the funniest faces ever and I just look at it routinely to make me smile. There is a reason though that he is so proud and it is because he is wearing underwear for the first time. Now that leads me to my story. My brother and his two oldest boys came to visit us. We headed into San Francisco and we did everything touristy you could possibly do in one day. We went to Alcatraz, wandered the wharf and of course ate at In-n-Out. We took the trolley to Union Square and walked to China town. We drove down Lombard and finally headed for home. However the funny was actually on the ferry back from Alcatraz. It was that perfect fall day in San Francisco. The kind that reminds you of why it really is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I get excited over funny things. I was really excited for the ferry ride back from Alcatraz. I mean really excited. I knew the views were going to be amazing. They were amazing going but we couldn't get the good seats on the top because they were taken. But we planned it perfectly and when we got on the ferry we all bolted to the top of the boat. That is when Charlie told me he had to go to the bathroom. He has to strip down when he goes to the bathroom right down to the buff. It is quite a process and it was no different right there on that ferry. He sat down on that toilet the entire time going back to San Francisco. That's right I missed all the gorgeous views--I had missed the whole thing. He got off the toilet right as we were docking. I will always remember that ferry ride. I think that is what is so funny about kids-- nothing ever goes according to the plan in your head. During the first parenting years you're frustrated because nothing is how you pictured. But then you learn to adjust to all the changes and confusion and suddenly everything is all pretty funny. Over time I would have forgotten that ferry ride but now it would be impossible to forget that little toddler sitting naked rocking back and forth to the bay waves on that toilet.

My Mom gave me a card with the quote "Only God could make a toddler." It's absolutely the truth-- they are everything hilarious and perfect. I am grateful for that picture of Charlie in his underwear and to be a Mom of a toddler

Delicious Autumn

Delicious autumn!
My very soul is
wedded to it, and if I were a bird
I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.
George Eliot

This says it all and I couldn't describe my feelings any more perfect then if I had 100 lifetimes.

The only thing I might want to add is that delicious has another meaning for me. To me delicious autumn means pumpkin and everything that I eat should and will have pumpkin. This pumpkin frenzy lasts from about September right through December. I will post some of my favorites every once in a while but I just came across these 2 and they were fabulous. The first I found blog surfing on my sis in law Julie's blog and it was so easy it wasn't even funny. A little dangerous because it is so easy and well those are staples in my cupboards and it takes all of 1 min. to make. The second came in the mail on a Realtor letter. That's funny right?

Pumpkin Cookies
1 Box of spice cake mix
1 can of 15 oz. pumpkin
1 c. chocolate chips

Cook 14-16 min. @ 350 degrees That's it and they are great! You can add a little cream cheese frosting if you want!

Pumpkin Cheesecake in a Gingersnap Crust
1 1/2 c. gingersnap cookie crumbs
3/4 c. ground hazelnuts
3 tbsp. brown sugar
6 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted
3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese softened
1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. canned solid pack pumpkin
1/2 c. heavy cream
1/3 c. maple syrup
1 tbsp. vanilla
3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground allspice
4 eggs

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 in. spring form pan. Using fork combine gingersnaps, hazelnuts and 3 tbsp. brown sugar and melted butter. Press mixture onto the bottom and 2 in. up the sides of the pan to form the crust. With an electric mixer beat cream cheese and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the pumpkin and mix in the cream, maple syrup, cinnamon, allspice and vanilla. Beat in the eggs one at a time until smooth. Pour batter onto prepared crust. Bake for 90 min. or until the center of cheesecake is set. Allow to cool in pan for 30 min. then refrigerate overnight.

I am unbelievably grateful for delicious autumn!

Halloweening!

I still believe that Halloween is the best holiday. I mean come on kids dress up and run to strangers houses and they give you candy--it really is the best concept ever! We started out like we always do chili, corn bread and witches brew at our house. The miller's joined us for dinner and then we all headed out trick or treating. California delivered perfect Halloween weather. Just cold enough to let you know it was fall but no jackets. Just enough wind to make it spooky and no moonlight so it was pitch black. A perfect Halloween!
This face is what I am grateful for! Charlie was the best this year. He got the concept and ran up to the door to get his candy but saved his energy between houses and rode in the stroller. So you had to be careful because he would fling himself out when we got to the next house. He flung himself and Aunt Ann wasn't ready and he landed on his head. He still had a huge bruise. It kept us on our toes and it was hilarious!

Chloe Miller and Ella as little witches.

The three kids since Nicholas is a dumb teenager and didn't go trick or treating. I mean that is ridiculous I went until I got married.

Thank goodness for my little girl--there is another witch in the family!

I am grateful for little girls who dress up in witch costumes, little three year old clowns, and of course ghosts!

A New Chapter

That's right this is a picture of my son and a girl (who is clearly not me or Ella). It is Nicholas's first date and it happens to be San Ramon High's Homecoming dance. He turned "16" a week before this date so we really didn't have a choice but to let Nicholas start this new chapter in his life. Luckily, it was a nice way to ease us in because they go in such huge groups. Tom and I even got to go to the pre party which by the way was hilarious! So wish us luck as now we add one more thing to worry about in our life--girls!!
This is one thing I am not grateful for--

Perfect Pumpkin Picking

I really don't know why I love the pumpkin patch so much. Maybe its that fall continues to be my favorite time of year and I have been going to a pumpkin patch every year with the kids as long as I can remember. Whatever the reason it is certainly a highlight for me! This year I couldn't wait any longer for Nicholas to join us and we had to go without him. He doesn't get home until dark and well that just won't do. So we headed off ourselves and had marvelous time picking the perfect pumpkin!

Another day to be grateful for!
OK so anyhoo last night my children went to bed even earlier than normal so I found myself with quite a block of uninterrupted time. So what did I do I made a signature for my blog. I am seriously quite impressed with myself because it took so much concentrating on my part to try and figure it out but I did it!! So now my posts will end with this little tidbit...

Fun with Grandma and Grandpa!

Grandpa taught Benjamin how to play chess and chinese checkers. It was constant gaming with Grandpa.
Union Square in San Francisco

Me and the kids watching the Blue Angels.
We watched the blue Angels on Treasure Island. Our view overlooked the bay, city, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge with the blue Angels in the background! It was truly amazing.

It's Great to be Eight

Gabriella Grace was so happy for her special day and could hardly wait to finally be baptized.
My Parents came for 5 days to spend time with the family and to see Ella get baptized. As usual it was so much fun to have them!

The Doxeys, The John and Ann Call family, my parents and our family. It was a perfect day!
